Term 3 at Sim+Co intentionally aligns with the Art Gallery of SA showing Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition  exhibition.

We will spend term 3 focussing on the painting style ‘Impressionism,’ pulling apart the techniques and tricks wonderful Master painters before us used but using acrylic paint which is quick drying and perfect for working in layers.

The first half of term will be capturing quick studies, copying an Impressionist painting (in a loose, quick and playful way!), a landscape, a portrait - then onto your own wonderful choice of reference images (we have a great library of images to choose from or BYO) for the second half. You can choose to paint from family holiday snaps or maybe an ordinary moment in life as your reference or a face, it’s about the mood, it’s less about the subject and more the mood.

Impressionism is less about painting what something is and more about painting what it feels like to experience it in a fleeting moment. Think shimmering light on water, a windy afternoon, café chatter, lavender fields vibrating in heat, or sunlight flickering through gum trees. It is painting with atmosphere instead of precision.

We let go of perfectionism, tightly rendered and blended styles, grab larger brushes, limited palettes and a carefree attitude and play with painting the feeling your reference image with colour, mood and light.

Students will learn about capturing light and atmosphere, the tricks of broken colour and making your painting feel alive using everyday subjects and scenes as our muse.

Possible catch-up sessions for missed classes on Tuesday nights with Cat’s other class if space available in same term.

cat leonard bio

Cat Leonard began her professional artist journey after attending the North Adelaide School of Fine Art in the late 1980s, initially building a small art business focussed on printmaking, painting and textiles before evolving through several ventures into her current art practice.

Her diverse body of work encompasses exhibiting, commissioned paintings, portraits, illustrations and large-scale murals, as well as teaching workshops and tutoring painting across various Adelaide venues.

She maintains a daily creative practice dedicated to developing her distinctive style, one that deliberately balances chaos and order to reflect her personal experience in the world.
